The Buddha statue in Thimphu, Bhutan, officially known as the Buddha Dordenma, is a monumental bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha gilded in gold. Towering at 51.5 meters (169 feet) high, it is one of the largest sitting Buddha statues in the world. Situated atop a hill in the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, it majestically overlooks the southern entrance to the Thimphu Valley, offering stunning panoramic views. The statue was completed in 2015 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and also fulfills an ancient prophecy foretelling the building of a large statue in the region to bestow blessings of peace and harmony upon the world. Uniquely, the massive three-storey throne that the main Buddha figure sits on serves as a large meditation hall, and the entire structure houses an astonishing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues within its enlightened body. This landmark is not only a major pilgrimage site but also a powerful symbol of peace, prosperity, and Bhutan’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage.
